The district of Görlitz is on the move. The change from fossil energy production to a "district of sustainability" has begun. Strategists with visions and creative doers not only work on viable concepts for the future, they also implement them on site. The scientific know-how for this comes from the "think tanks" of the district.
The Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, the International University Institute (IHI), the Helmholtz Research Center Casus and two locations of the Fraunhofer Society are available as close partners for the design processes. The settlement of the German Center for Astrophysics in Görlitz and Upper Lusatia will significantly shape the district as a research location.
University of Zittau/Goerlitz
The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is one of the scientifically and conceptually most powerful universities for applied sciences. Within a wide range of research fields, three key research areas have emerged: energy and the environment, transformation processes in the economy and society, and materials-structure-surfaces. Thanks to decades of research at the university, close economic contacts and cooperation are maintained with well-known companies at home and abroad, but also with regional companies. The university also works in various ways with recognized research institutes such as the Helmholtz Centers and the Fraunhofer Society. The students particularly appreciated the breadth of subject matter and the quality of the course offerings, as well as the practical relevance of the teaching.
Celsiuz: Co-Creation Lab
The Co-Creation Lab at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is a place where researchers, entrepreneurs and everyone who wants to find good solutions to complex challenges together in a relaxed atmosphere can gather ideas and experiment. The special focus of the place is on the topic: critical supply infrastructure. Their problem can be summed up in the following question: "How do we ensure that households, companies and municipalities are supplied with electricity, heat, water and the Internet in the future?" The large control center can be used to calculate, simulate and visualize. It is played through whether and how the solutions found work together. Celsiuz has state-of-the-art simulation technology to innovatively meet the problems of tomorrow today. It is part of the Saxony5 project, a joint project of the 5 Saxon universities for applied sciences
Zittau power plant laboratory
A conversation with the engineers from the Zittau Power Plant Laboratory (ZKWL) is worthwhile for anyone interested in a climate-neutral and sustainable energy supply (decarbonization). Green process heat in industry, green local heat for municipalities and districts, the storage of heat and electricity and sector coupling are highly exciting topics that are being researched and put into practice at the ZKWL. New technologies such as year-round heat supply based on water heat or the TMS battery, which stores electricity in steam and converts it back to electricity, enable climate-neutral and sustainable energy supply solutions in many areas. Municipal heating planning can also benefit from research for the energy transition. The ZKWL is developing, experimentally investigating and optimizing for this.
Lusatia – Life & Technology
More than 75 partners make the Innovation Alliance Lausitz – Life & Technology a network of opportunities. Core areas of expertise are additive manufacturing, energy efficiency and networked storage technologies as well as the further development of our region towards an attractive Lusatia in the areas of living, working and (further) education. Competences in four different manufacturing processes promote innovative products and services with regional companies. There are close contacts to research institutions and business partners in the Czech Republic and Poland. Together with the alliance, companies can support the innovative economic power of the region, develop themselves further and think further about topics of (further) education as well as working and living in Lusatia in an innovative way in order to (re)inspire people for this region.
Lander³
LaNDER³ stands for "Lausitz natural fiber composite materials - decentralized energy, raw materials, resources and recycling". The technology partnership examines the closed value chain of natural fiber composites, from the extraction of the natural fibers to the recycling of the components at the end of their life. New sustainable solutions in the field of green technologies have been researched in the technologically advanced natural fiber center at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences since 2017. With more than 35 partners from business, industry and research, LaNDER³ has successfully brought the first natural fiber-based products and technologies to market maturity and thus contributed to the Lusatian bioeconomy. The strengths of the technology partnership lie in the research and development of new types of natural fiber-based composites for the vehicle and construction industry, as well as in fiber processing and component recycling.
Cyber Security Learning Lab
As part of joint research projects with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has been operating one of six "Cyber Security Learning Laboratories" in Germany since 2017. The goal of the learning lab is the development of new procedures and solutions for the IT security of critical infrastructures such as electricity and water supply. The researchers simulate cyber attacks and look for weak points in order to be able to quickly discover and prevent hacker attacks. The know-how is also passed on to companies and authorities as part of an extensive training program. Those responsible for security, managers from the field of information technology and users at energy suppliers, authorities or companies can learn about practical procedures and practice how to effectively ward off hacker attacks of all kinds.
Fraunhofer Plastics Center
The Fraunhofer Plastics Center Oberlausitz (FKO) in Zittau is the point of contact when it comes to research and development expertise in the fields of plastics and manufacturing technology as well as construction, IT and product design. The institute is well integrated into the scientific structures on the campus of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and works on promising, application-oriented R&D topics, especially in the areas of plastics processing, additive manufacturing, lightweight construction and hydrogen technologies. The research-intensive Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University of Liberec are closely interlinked with the Fraunhofer Plastics Center due to their geographical proximity. Together they are committed to knowledge and technology transfer in the Upper Lusatia region. Original ideas are turned into innovations together with companies.
International University Institute
The IHI Zittau is a central scientific institution of the TU Dresden. The leitmotif of the institute is "Biodiversity and Responsible Management". The student body of the IHI Zittau includes 300 young people who represent more than 30 nations on four continents. Teaching and research at the IHI Zittau focus on the tension between economy, ecology and society. The research areas and teaching topics range from molecular biotechnology to biodiversity taxonomy and ecosystem services to sustainable and responsible management. Intensive cooperation exists both with the faculties of environmental sciences, economics and biology at the TU Dresden and with non-university partner institutions such as the Leibniz Association and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. https://tu-dresden.de/ihi-zittau
Senckenberg Society
For more than 200 years, researchers in Görlitz have been investigating the biodiversity, systematics and ecology of animals and plants as well as geological issues. In the border triangle of Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland, the Senckenberg Society for Nature Conservation at the Görlitz site, as the leading research museum in the Euroregion, assumes a central function as a motor for natural research and science communication, even beyond national borders. Scientists from all over the world conduct research here in the fields of soil zoology, botany, zoology and geology. The new Senckenberg campus will create new opportunities to expand and improve the research infrastructure. Around 6.5 million items from the collection are professionally stored in the building complex, and workplaces and laboratories are created for around 120 employees. The campus is scheduled to open in 2025.
Research center CASUS
In Görlitz, the new Center for Advanced Systems Understanding describes complex systems, such as the climate, traffic in a metropolis or human metabolism, with a comprehensive approach - systems research. In particular, CASUS would like to promote the development of new, flexible software tools. This means that complex systems can be simulated more realistically than before, making more reliable predictions possible. In this way, concrete data can be used to examine how global climate change will affect Saxony socio-economically. Partners include Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ), Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) and Technical University of Dresden (TUD) on the German side as well as the Uniwersytet Wroclawski.
German Center for Astrophysics
From 2023, a large national research center with international appeal will be established in Görlitz and Upper Lusatia. The DZA is a joint initiative of astronomy and astroparticle physics in Germany. It will advance resource-saving digitization, develop new technologies and create new perspectives for the region. With its unique combination of research and development in IT, sensor technology and materials research and its need for production facilities, the DZA will provide economic impetus. After the development phase, annual funding of around 170 million euros is planned for the final stage. The data streams from astronomical observatories around the world are brought together in Görlitz. In this way, new technologies can be developed worldwide in close cooperation with Saxon and international industry.
