our strengths

What we are really proud of

Anyone who asks the inhabitants of the priceless country what they value most about their homeland will be confronted with a large variety of positive characteristics. The spectrum ranges from fishing and tourist trains to being close to home, child-friendly and stress-free to water sports and mountains. This is also wonderful proof of how proud and attached people are to their homeland. According to a study by Jacobs University in 2021, people with the greatest ties to their homeland in Germany live in Upper Lusatia.

We are happy to be a part of the traditional Oberlausitz. This deep connection is not a sure-fire success. Idyllic landscapes and charming locations alone are not enough to achieve this strong connection. Rather, it is the people who, with their commitment, their ideas, their courage and their passion, make our homeland worth living and loving. You will get to know some of them on this page. You will also find out which strengths mean that we like to describe our district of Görlitz as a priceless country.

Unique Pricelessland

The priceless country is our district of Görlitz. With a wink and a little self-mockery, we want to set ourselves apart from the metropolitan areas and show how attractive it is to live and work here. More and more people are recognizing the priceless advantages of living in the priceless country.

So close to the sun

So close to the sun

– priceless.

The soul of our district of Görlitz are about 254,000 inhabitants who live in 39 communities and 14 cities. These numbers sound very sober, as they say nothing about how incredibly beautiful it is in priceless land. Often one cannot stop being amazed. For example at sunrise in Kromlauer Park. When the Rakotzbrücke closes in a circle in the mirror-smooth water, your heart can already warm up. Morning grouches should be told to calm down that the sunsets in the priceless country also have their very special charm. As the sun moves from east to west over the priceless land, this wonderful stretch of land can be experienced in all its beauty. Mountains worth hiking with a wonderful view, picturesque valleys with babbling rivers, historic towns with a time travel character, secluded forests with guaranteed mushrooms, dreamlike villages with unique wooden architecture, fairytale castles, lakes suitable for water sports and idyllic parks - the list of places worth seeing is long. Visitors are often overwhelmed with capturing everything within a few days. That's why we recommend staying here longer or forever.

Our TRIANGLE RELATIONSHIP

Our TRIANGLE RELATIONSHIP

– priceless.

Three cultures in the heart of Europe. We live, work and celebrate together with our Polish and Czech neighbors. Whether culture or sport - we are also friends in our free time, just like the sailors on Lake Berzdorf. In the Neisse Nysa/Nisa Euroregion, tri-national efforts are being made to work together better. In sports, in culture, in administration and above all in tourism, constant progress can be observed in the diverse unity of the three corner nations. For example, there are discounted cross-border tickets for train travelers in the Neisse region, information and reference material in three languages and the unique joy of three different forms of hospitality on one trip - or even on just one day! - to be able to experience. And if you don't know on which side of the Neisse the train is traveling through the dense green of the priceless country: "Vítaný!" (Czech) and "Witam!" (Polish) mean: "Welcome!".

Our traditions

The numerous half-timbered houses are typical of the priceless country. The 15./16. The architectural style that emerged in the 19th century combines the advantages of up to three different construction methods: block construction, solid construction and half-timbered construction. In the villages south of Bautzen to the region around Löbau and Zittau, the half-timbered houses form a unique architectural landscape over a distance of 50 kilometers. Some town centers have almost 300 of these buildings, which owe their name to a round arch and support structure - the truss. Every house is unique. Lovingly cared for, the half-timbered houses are a coveted home for young people too.

The interest group farmhouse from Cologne has named the half-timbered house farmhouse of the year 2020. This prize, which has been awarded annually since 2017, recognizes the immeasurable diversity of these houses. After a drastic decline in the stock over the last 100 years, it is now a matter of preserving and caring for the buildings that have been preserved. In the past 16 years, the Umgebindehaus Foundation has made an important contribution. However, around 40 percent of the houses are still waiting for repairs. The foundation therefore supports everyone who wants to buy and renovate a half-timbered house.

Anyone who loves the forest will be amazed by the priceless country. A paradise for all collectors, packed with all kinds of berries and mushrooms, but also some four-legged residents. Little Red Riding Hood is well advised not to stray from the path.

Our Copacabana

Our Copacabana

Overcrowded beaches, towels and blankets that hardly give a glimpse of the sand and crowds of people who push themselves tightly into the water. Luckily we don't have anything to do with the (sun) hat. Admittedly, on a hot day during the summer holidays, it can get a bit crowded on the beaches of our lakes. Fortunately, some of them are really big. They can't be overwhelmed that quickly. So we are proud that the Bärwalder See, the largest lake in Saxony and the Berzdorfer See, the easternmost lake in Germany, belong to the priceless region. The Olbersdorfer See and the Quitzdorf reservoir as well as numerous gravel pits make the hearts of water sports enthusiasts and anglers beat faster. Sailing, surfing, stand up paddling, cycling, jogging, walking, inline skating, playing beach volleyball - our lakes are great fitness makers. But some people just want to go swimming or squint in the sun. How boring? How relaxing! There are enough quiet shore spots for that too. Another insider tip: Sunrises and sunsets can be experienced particularly wonderfully here. Word about the mosquitoes got around on some evenings.

The glider pilots from Görlitz have known it for a long time: These landscapes, these views - simply priceless. Many young people also recognize this without getting on the plane. For them, the priceless country is their future. Here they learn and study, find space to try things out and put down roots. An important partner is the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, where young people in the heart of Europe can study and do research in promising fields. But the numerous, highly specialized and world-class companies also offer exciting training opportunities and career opportunities for modern and future-oriented professions in various sectors. Or also in very traditional ones, which not only keep up with the future through technologization and digitization, but also drive developments themselves - from carpenter to wood mechanic, from mechanic to mechatronics engineer and from pencil to master craftsman. The joy of being a sought-after specialist in expanding companies and industries: priceless.

Our family ties

Our family ties

– priceless.

The priceless country offers parents good jobs, but these are usually associated with a temporary absence from home. And there are also some cultural and sporting temptations outside of the family after work. It's priceless that grandma and grandpa live right around the corner and are there for the little ones. In your own garden, on the playground around the corner or in the great outdoors, there is space to discover, play and have some adventures. The development shows: after a few years in the "out there world" there are more and more people who choose their homeland, the district of Görlitz. And not only consciously, but also with the future in mind. Because the European city of Görlitz-Zgorzelec is a city in two countries, there are great opportunities for the little ones while growing up. Bilingual kindergartens, bilingual child-friendly cultural offers and schools have long been a matter of course here in the heart of Europe.

Our mega malls

Our mega malls

– priceless.

Humane, local, guaranteed fresh: these are our mega malls - popularly known as markets with the best and freshest from the region. Is there anything nicer than having the producer explain the name of an old variety? Or chatting up stories with farmers, hobby gardeners and preserving artists about the latest jam, compote and preserving tips? A modern self-scan checkout in a normal, windowless mega mall? Definitely not. In the priceless country, initiatives such as the market enthusiasm in Görlitz and Zittau are becoming more and more popular. Here seasonal and regional products are offered, which have not been transported more than 40 km. Ordered online and picked up at a fixed time at a location. This type of shopping is on the rise. Almost every day on her blog of the same name, Anja Nixdorf-Munkwitz, creator of "A Basket of Luck", provides great recipes for what is currently ripening in the local fields. Simply click in, join in and enjoy - it's worth it! The campaign "You you have the choice, buy local" in the district of Görlitz has made it its mission to make local producers and products better known in order to promote diversity far away from the mega malls. From our point of view, these initiatives are a priceless win-win situation, both for the dealers and manufacturers and for the customers. In addition to relaxed shopping with personal contact with the producers, this form of trading is environmentally friendly, sustainable and strengthens the local economy. And to be honest: Food from local producers also tastes much better:

Our string pullers

Our string pullers

– priceless.

There are many string pullers in Priceless Land. Some bury high-speed broadband cables in the ground, and others consolidate myriad wires into controls for high-tech machines. There are inventors who work on tailor-made electronic solutions where there are no longer any wires to be seen. We have craftsmen here who assemble wire strips into high-security ropes or connect them into resilient nets. And of course we also have the virtual string pullers who rely on strong networks. The good thing about it: Everyone pulls together. They all want to get involved and have the motivation to bring our homeland forward. In the more than 10,500 companies in the district of Görlitz, people who are close to their homeland work and assert themselves with their specialist knowledge and skills on a daily basis. They make products that are among the best in the world. New ideas are always welcome here. Every new string puller strengthens our connection to the powerful business location.

The natural fitness studio right outside the front door usually offers numerous opportunities to do sports. With open-air training, you can enjoy the peace and quiet, only occasionally you meet like-minded two- and four-legged friends. Our hooligans

Our hooligans

We've got some really tough guys in Priceless Land. For example, young men who lovingly care for the elderly and chemical freaks who produce one of the most famous dishwashing liquids in Germany. But we also have very sensitive women. For example, one builds industrial robots for the automotive industry and another lends a hand as a metal technician in the foundry. Our young professionals are really brilliant. That's a good thing, after all they'll have to run this place later. And so that they don't get the idea of leaving their homeland, we make the kids really curious when they are still at school. From individual coaching to large training fairs, we help young people in their decision-making process for their dream job. One thing is certain: you no longer have to leave your home country to find an exciting job. Young people can also pursue a career in the numerous attractive training companies in the unaffordable country. Skilled hands, clever minds and visionary thinkers are needed. “Oack ne jechn”, our neighbors always say. And sometimes they also call out "Kummt oack rei!" to "loaver" a bit with us "derheeme" at a "Lurke". If you don't understand their language right away, it's best to just say "nu". You can not go wrong. The priceless country is part of Upper Lusatia. The people here have put down particularly deep roots. According to a study by Jacobs University Bremen, the people of Upper Lusatia have the greatest ties to their home country. This is not only due to the charming landscape, the social roots and the cozy dialect. The quaint “Häusl” are also really easy to fall in love with. The places in the south of the district of Görlitz are characterized by numerous half-timbered houses. The 15./16. Our fire show

Our fire show

– priceless.

Fascinating fire shows take place every day in many places in Priceless Land.
Unfortunately, often no one knows, and so the audience is usually missing. Artists are not responsible for flying sparks, but rather welders, metal technicians, machinists or foundry mechanics. With their work and craftsmanship, they create products for a global market. Your sparking makes us proud. Because behind them are companies that shape our priceless country. Many of them are family businesses whose bosses not only have a company location here, but also their home. Even though we are hidden far to the east, more and more economic strategists from other regions are discovering us. Our climate here is ideal for economic growth. This is proven by companies like SKAN Deutschland AG, which has grown enormously within just a few years after settling here. Ingenious spark sprayers can also be found there. business brochure

Our WOODWORMS

Our WOODWORMS

– priceless.

Craft has golden soil.
In the district of Görlitz, there is still a great tradition of craftsmanship with well-founded expertise in the wide field of timber construction. To ensure that this remains the case in the future, passionate master woodworkers and carpenters train young people and help the new generation of woodworkers to prepare themselves for the future under the most modern technical conditions. Because only wood artists with a love of craftsmanship and wood as a material can respond to the highest demands, wishes and ideas of an individually designed living space with millimeter precision. Wood-loving specialists are needed to maintain our unique half-timbered houses or to wake them up from their slumber. And no matter how great the passion, carpenters alone do not keep our priceless country alive. The variety of trades in the district of Görlitz ranges from bricklayers, climate experts and electricians to mechatronics engineers and metalworkers to bakers and hairdressers. The 13 guilds work hand in hand on the future of our homeland. The craft sticks together! Craftsmanship has a future! District craftsmen's association in Görlitz

Our SCIENCE FICTION HEROES

Our SCIENCE FICTION HEROES

– priceless.

Every country needs its heroes. In priceless land, the bright minds who think far into the future for us are definitely part of it. Without them we would really be lost. We are on the move. The brown coal works! But what comes after that? Strategists with visions and creative doers not only work on viable concepts for the future, they also implement them on site. The scientific know-how for this comes from the "think tanks" of the district. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, the International University Institute (IHI), the Helmholtz Research Center Casus, the Senckenberg Nature Research Society, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and two locations of the Fraunhofer Society are among others close partners for the design processes available. However, it is not only in these institutions that the course for the future is being set. In many companies, too, engineers and scientists think far ahead of the times. For example at digades GmbH in Zittau. The electronics specialists of the family business have been developing clever solutions that make people's lives easier, more comfortable and safer for 30 years. Companies like these are exciting training companies for young people, attractive employers for specialists and powerful drivers for the priceless country.

Our Hollywood

Our Hollywood

– priceless.

Live where others make films! The largest town in the district of Görlitz has developed into a Mecca for (Hollywood) film production over the years. It's no wonder that domestic and foreign directors, location scouts and set designers love Görlitz: here you will find all architectural styles since the Middle Ages combined in just a few square kilometers. In the city on the Neisse, it is possible to walk over historic cobblestones, admire medieval, baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau buildings within a few minutes' walk and revel in the splendor of bygone days. However, this is not a privilege of great movie stars. Not only the film producers are Görlitz fans. The inhabitants of the priceless region love their "Pearl of Upper Lusatia" for the same reasons as the makers of the dream factory - Italian flair, historical ambience and family photo motifs that Hollywood can only dream of. And with the city's new film academy, the focus should be on the further training of experts in the areas of "production", "image, light and sound" and "equipment", so that the future of Görliwood continues to shine - with specialist staff "from here". Not only for film fans: priceless.

The Moravian Stars are a gift from the district of Görlitz to the world. A global symbol of a loving homeland greeting, straight from priceless land. Stars have been proudly handcrafted for generations. Wherever such a star shines in the world, it indicates that contemplative coziness prevails there and that dear people also live there. Whereby one or the other story was reported that the assembly in the living room at home did not always go without conflict on the family handicraft stage. No wonder, because making stars is a real professional job: 750,000 stars are made here by hand every year by 140 and 20 employees. There is a great longing for manual work "Made in Herrnhut". Especially after the live experience in the modern demonstration workshop. Every year around 70,000 visitors come to take a look at the traditional manufactory in Herrnhut and to make their own star. Incidentally, for all its tradition, Herrnhuter Sterne GmbH is also an extremely modern employer. Because here, in addition to the early and late shifts, there is also an extra "mommy shift". An employer adapts to the needs of its employees? That is quite clear: priceless.
